If you're like me, you are busy taking care of others and getting stuff done! It's not easy to stop and rest. Working after 5pm is common and my brain gets ramped up when it should be slowing down. I have to carve out a little time to relax. Time off allows more space for creativity.

Here are some tips to re-energize after a long day

First, dedicate a space in your home where you can relax. If you have young children you may not have a space of your own because those little ones share every space; especially when you want to use the restroom, am I right? My kids are teens but I remember those days.

Picking a Calming Color Scheme

Designing a relaxation space starts with creating a relaxing atmosphere. The best way to do this is through color, comfortable furnishings, and even aromatherapy. The color of your space can play a huge role in the emotions you feel in that space, so hit the local paint store and get your color swatches ready! Shades of blue, green, and white are great choices, because of their ability to evoke calm, tranquility, and balance. These naturally derived tones can be brought into your relaxation space through paint color, accent furnishings, and decor pieces like rugs, curtains, and wall art. Or use fresh greenery to bring a sense of vitality to your space, with the added benefits of purifying the air. A few of my favorite calm paint colors are Grassland, Wool Skein, Sea Salt, Samovar Silver, and Alabaster by Sherwin Williams.

Aromatherapy & Essential Oils

After you have decided on the color scheme that best fits your space, try introducing aromatherapy into you relaxation room with essential oil diffusers. Aromatherapy can help to reduce anxiety, stress, and promote both physical and mental healing. When applied topically, essential oils can help to target specific physical ailments, while the aroma helps to calm the mind and help you unwind. Invest in a diffuser that is easy to clean, and is the right size for your room, to make sure the aroma reaches throughout the entire space. Also, do some research into different oils and the effects they have, to find the best ones for you!

Supportive Seating That’s Also Stylish

After you have your design set, and you’re diffusing your favorite essential oil, you’ll need a comfortable place to sit and put your feet up. Invest in spacious living room pieces to make a comfortable space to lounge in at the end of the day. Look into options that also have the added benefit of being easy to clean and durable, to help take the stress out of removing possible stains, and limit wear and tear.If you have back problems or need extra support in certain areas, be sure to do research into different seating options that are tailored to you, and provide proper support. This can apply to your seating at work too, with ergonomics having an effect on both our health and productivity. Make sure to invest in a supportive desk chair, to make your body ache less, and better unwind once your home and in your relaxation space. This can also help to alleviate any future health problems from poor posture or circulation to improper seating.

Screen-Free Zone

Creating a screen-free zone can not only help to calm mental activity but can help to reduce eye strain as well. We are constantly bombarded with screens both at home and at work. So make your relaxation space one where you can really disconnect and rejuvenate. Design a bookshelf with some of your favorite authors, and don’t be afraid to have too many reading materials. The more diverse options the better, so you’ll have a good read for any mood you’re in! Or, get a sound system to play your favorite tunes, or for white noise when you’re trying to unwind.

At-Home Spa

If you aren't one for putting your feet up, try making your bathroom space an at-home spa! Soaking in a bath with essential oils and epsom salts is great way to relieve muscle tension and unwind. It's also good to get some magnesium. Try a mud mask while you're at it! I like to enjoy a cup of tea or a glass of wine while I soak. When I make the time to relax before bed I find that I sleep better and wake up ready to take the day!
