10 Home Decor Trends

This year, more than any year, our homes are our castles. So, whether you’re decorating a six-bed mansion or a studio apartment, 2020 is full of inspirational and exciting trends that you can emulate in your own home.

1. The New Grey

We’ve all seen the grey-scale hallways, living rooms and entire houses, but that color has had its time now. While grey isn’t out, the color to watch this year is blue! It’s clear, elegant and calm — just what we all need right now. So, if you’ve already gone all out with grey, blue luckily works well with those color palettes

2. Go Abstract

This new trend is all about fun — making bold statements and expressing yourself in your home. This could take the form of punchy patterns in fabrics or bold colors on the walls. One great way to do that this year could be color blocking your walls — whether it’s your bathroom or your hallway, it’s sure to make a splash.

3. Get Glam

This year is all about glamorous, celebrity style. More grown-up than last year, it’s a sophisticated style that’s all about opulence and excess. Think curves, fluid shapes and grown-up elegance. When it comes to furnishing, that means soft edges and rich colors. For fittings, it means gold and mirrors. Adding some touches of glamour into your home can elevate the space, and make walking into your living room after a day in your home office feel a lot more relaxing. Martini, anyone?

4. Dark Florals

There were years where floral wallpaper was something to be got rid of, and now it’s something to be celebrated. That doesn’t mean keeping your grandmother’s wallpaper. It means taking bold, dramatic designs and applying them to the walls. It’s floral meets modern, with dark backgrounds and striking patterns.

5. Home Offices

This one shouldn’t surprise you. Once, home offices were neglected spaces (unless you already worked from home). Now, they’re such large parts of most people’s lives, that renovating them has kicked off a huge new trend. Whether your style is classical or ultramodern, there’s so much inspiration to be found online. It’s likely that home offices are here to stay, as more of us will be working from home in the future, so decorating this area is most definitely worth it. Check out Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration, and decorate the office to suit your own style and needs. And if you don’t have a room, consider carving out an area for yourself in a hallway or living room — having a permanent space that’s ‘yours’ can really make a difference.

6. Rattan

Natural textures like bamboo and rattan can evoke a real sense of calm and luxury in a home. Think Morrocan palaces and Caribbean huts on the beach. So, for those looking to bring some sunshine into their homes, this is a trend to get involved with. Rattan furniture in bleached tones makes the room feel instantly brighter and quite beachy. This trend works particularly well in bedrooms, where you can wrap yourself up in those holiday vibes.

7. Dried Flowers

Dried flowers have been huge on social media this year, elevating even the simplest corner to high glamour. From papas grass to protea, you can find gorgeous bunches online or in stores. And if you’re feeling crafty, you can actually make your own by hanging fresh flowers upside down for a couple of weeks. They bring a feeling of calm and nature to a home and create interesting textures in a space. And the best bit? They will last for months, unlike fresh flowers!

8. Chintz

This trend has been gaining traction for a few years, and now it’s one that can’t be missed. This renaissance means big florals, English country garden themed rooms and pretty fabrics. This trend can be easily achieved in your own home with soft floral furnishings and lots and lots of ruffles. Keep the place feeling bring and clear with light furnishings and open spaces, or embrace the cosy-feeling by going with rich colors to complement the florals.

9. Sustainable Design

Thankfully, this trend is here to stay. As people start to think more about their impact on the world and their carbon footprint, this trickles down to the interior design space. While some may have felt happy renovating spaces every few years and buying new furniture, many now see how wasteful that is. So, to make your living space more eco-friendly, it’s time to start shopping more sustainably. That could mean buying furniture made from responsibly-sourced materials (and not mass made) or buying vintage pieces. Not only is vintage a great option for finding furniture that no one else has, it can also be a lot cheaper than buying new, too!

10. Multi-functional Spaces

When the world turned upside down this years, our homes became our refuge. And our gyms, discos, restaurants and bars. This isn’t set to end just yet, and even if it does, many people have a newfound love for their homes. So, to keep rooms working well, invest in some brilliant storage spaces and movable pieces of furniture. These pieces will allow you to keep all of your bits and pieces away from the clear room, and will enable you to move furniture around to make the space suit your every need. You can invest in some pieces that will help you make ‘zones’ in your larger living areas — that could mean adding a foldable desk into the room or using a drinks trolly to divide up the space.

Hopefully, this list has provided you with some inspiration to decorate your home this year. Whether you choose to go down the ultra-traditional chintz route, or you’re excited to get out your paints and go abstract on the walls, it’s time to own your space. Homes are more important than ever before, so it’s time to make your mark and experiment on the place!
