Aniline Leather

This Design Expressions post is about aniline leather. What is it and do you want it upholstered on your furniture? There are three basic types of dyed leather. Each manufacturer treats its leather a little differently but these are the general types.Aniline LeatherThe leather is soaked in a soluble dye which allows the character of the leather to show through. You will see scars and natural marks and the color of the dye will be visible on both sides of the leather. In most cases there are no top coats applied to aniline leather so it is susceptible to scratching, soiling and fading.Semi-aniline LeatherSemi-aniline leather is also dyed like aniline leather but a thin topcoat is also applied with pigments.  The color is corrected and there is less "character". It is less susceptible to scratching, soiling and fading.Pigmented LeatherPigmented leather has a polymer coating. It has a less natural look but is the most durable type of leather due to the protective top coat.If you have pets and young children then a semi-aniline or pigmented leather is ideal. If you like the natural look and you don't mind a few scratches to add to the patina, then aniline is the best leather for you.semi-aniline leatherAniline LeatherHere is a little design inspiration for you with an aniline leather sofa!
