High/Low Interior Design
Have you heard of high/low interior design? It simply means splurging on high end items and then purchasing low end or budget friendly items. In order to stay within a specific budget a designer may select a very expensive custom piece of art and then work with the client's gently used dining chairs by reupholstering them. The end result is unique and within budget. For a high/low dining room I might start with the light fixture. In the dining room the light fixture should make a statement! It is after all, right above your head when sitting and at about eye level when standing. I recommend splurging on a beautiful chandelier like this Sebastian chandelier from Currey and Company which retails for about $2,750. Then add a low end dining table in a dark finish from Pier 1 for about $580.
