6 Tips for Selecting and Hanging Your Dining Room Chandelier

The dining room chandelier is not just a necessity for lighting the room; it's a special feature that sets the tone and reflects your personal flair!  Use these tips to help you select the proper size and hang it properly.

Here are my tips for selecting the right size chandelier for your dining room.

1. Add the length and width of the room together in feet and then that will be the diameter of your chandelier in inches.  For example, if you have a room that is 12' x 14', add 12 plus 14 and you get 26' and the perfect chandelier would be 26" in diameter.

2. Consider the visual weight or size of the chandelier.  If the chandelier is made of glass or painted white, it will have less visual weight than one made of iron or painted black.  You can select a larger chandelier if it is lighter in color than the recommendation in tip #1.

3. Keep your dining table in mind, too.  Your chandelier should be 12" narrower than the shortest width of the table.  This measurement doesn't have to be exact as long as you make sure that your chandelier is no wider than the shortest width of the table.

4. If your dining room is very long and the dining table is also quite long then two chandeliers would be best.  Hang two chandeliers, centered on each end of the dining table.

5. Hang the chandelier 30" above the table if the ceiling height is 8'.  Hang the chandelier 34" above the table if the ceiling height is greater than 8'.

6. Install a dimmer switch so that you can control the amount of light in the room and over the table.  Some gatherings are more intimate and less light works well.

And remember, rules can be broken!  Have fun with your chandelier!
